Re: English thread

If I were a Zadornov-style language scholar, I'd draw some theory from the fact that the word 'bloody' used as a swearword by the English sounds kind of like блядский in Russian.

Probably a pedantic nonnie means that you shouldn't use apostrophes as a quotation. Mustn't.

I know some French and some Latin but probably on about B1 level. It used to be better but I use them not nearly enough to keep them from declining. And when I'm trying to switch to French now, my head is filled with nothing but English words typically

Chinese, but I didn't practice since school and it's very very rusty.

By the way, I posted an invitation to join us on FFA, here https://fail-fandomanon.dreamwidth.org/ … 3176349402
Dunno if someone will want to, though.

I do, but due to lack of practice my other languages are not up to scratch. Though some of them were when i studied them  :pink:

I know some French (has been my second foreign language since around middle school) and some Swedish, but it's really hard to find any ways to practice when English is literally everywhere ;D I'm doing my best to keep them around, though.

Swedish

Oh, anon, I feel your pain. When I learned it, the main problem was the disappointing lack of materials for practice. There are hardly a dozen videos on YouTube in Swedish, wich have at least auto-subtitles.

Me too! Though I started with (mostly BL) manga. First I read it in Russian. Then I ran out of the fully translated stuff predictably and started stumbling onto more and more stuff only partially translated into Russian but fully - into English. I was resisting for some time but then one of favorites broke me, I sighed and downloaded a dictionary.
Then I got into fics. I don't even remember which fandom was the first, Death Note, maybe. Or was it Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles? Then I also got a hobby that had tons of info in English. Then books. And here I am ten years later.
Motivation is the key :hat:

Lmao that's why I learned English. My OTP had like 10 fics in Russian, but a quite big fanbase in English, so I was like "Yep, I have to learn English then."
My grammar still sucks tho.

Btw, does anyone know a good grammar book? I'm B1 level rn. I tried Cutting Edge books, but it for a group study and talking with myself was kinda weird. :smoke:

Re: English thread

Hello fellow nonnies, I'm here via the invite from FFA. I was surprised to see some of y'all write in English and then translate into Russian. I've only tried once to translate any of my fic into French and it was SO hard. I pretend I know French pretty well, I can read books and watch movies and chat with French people, but writing fiction is something else entirely.

I've only seen a tiny bit of Russian-language media. I've read Crime and Punishment, Heart of a Dog, and War and Peace but in English translations. In the US there's just not much of a fandom for anything in the Russosphere. Do y'all get fannish for Russian-language media too, or is it mostly imported stuff like Harry Potter or anime?

As for they're/their/there, they just all sound alike and when you're typing it's easy to go so fast that you sort of miss your spelling mistake. I'm a really good speller but to this day I still screw up the word 'necessary'. How many Cs and Ss does it need? Why can't my brain ever remember? We may never know. Also depending on the dialect some words sound the same, like in mine we pronounce 'pen' and 'pin' the same whereas many other Americans pronounce them differently. Other than that, I dunno, I've taken a few blows to the head by this point in my life so I've only got so many brain cells left to spell with.

I studied Japanese as my major at university, French was my second foreign language at school and I took some Spanish for fun. Now I remember shit in all three due to no practice. I guess it would be nice to maintain some semblance of at least A1 level but I dig in too much English stuff for work and don't have enough mental capacity for another languages. Sadly.

I can read and understand Spanish and Polish somewhere between B1 and B2 but I haven't had active practice in ages and probably wouldn't dare to speak or write right now.

Imported stuff is generally more popular but there are Russian-language media that have their own fandoms. And there's always RPF, of course.

Re: English thread

Now that's the thread I was looking for.

I wonder is there a place for anon with really poor grammar here? I kinda have no space to practice and I get the whole language thing chaotically, mostly by consuming content and some troubleshooting (there are never answers on Russuian :bubu:)
Just can't memorize things I'm not using daily.
Making notes is not that helpful, I can get what shit I meant back then even with mingled tenses and randomly scattered articles... mostly.
