I distinctly remember discovering ao3 and devouring English fics like crazy in high school, bumping up my vocabulary tremendously.

Mmm, yeah, rewind to all the TOS Kirk\Spock fics read for both fangirling and vocabular reasons. Thank god I never spoke English outside of school then 'cause it must have been some cringey shit of legendary levels.

Honestly I don't get it. They have no problem with 'destruct' and 'distract', 'week' and 'weak'. What is so special about 'they're' and 'their'?

I often write it's instead of its. I've no idea why. I know why native speakers make those mistakes, but it makes no sense for me to do it.

Because I learned English as a non-native speaker, so I was taught what "it's" and "its" mean at the same time as I was taught how to spell them. So I have no reason to confuse them.

What's strange is I've started to make this mistake only in recent years. I had no problems with it in school.

I often write it's instead of its. I've no idea why.

Same. I know why i do it. I always forget that  _'s should not be used in the genitive with 'it' the same way it is used with nouns :(
And I have started to do this recently, at school I didn't have that problem. Don't know why.

You're overthinking it, it's just a typo. And you don't see it straight away because you just saw this typo/mistake too often in English-writing places and got used to it.
Internet fucks with your literacy in general.

I always wondered, if Americans studying Russian find our grammar mistakes like ться тся, as dumb as we find those ones that you mentioned

as far as I know they're busy freaking out at the sight of verbs of motion and couldn't care less about what mistakes we make in our language

They first learn how to speak. Then they learn how to write. By the time they learn how to spell words, they are already fluent and that influence their writing.
Non-natives learn to spell at the same time as they learn new words. So they confuse their and they're and so on much less often. It just doesn't occur to them to confuse them.

What is so special about they-they're-their?

They sound about the same to natives. And English writing is so very detached from English pronunciation that all too often you can't spell the word correctly even if you know what it means and how exactly it's pronounced. It's like карова but ten times worse.

Yeah, those things are hard to learn even if you are already familiar with the concept. Like I don't need grammatical gender explained to me, but I still have problems remembering genders in German. Poor English speakers have to wrap their heads around the idea of a table or a spoon having a gender first.
