Lots of practice and it happened on its own. First I used a dictionary every page, then every few pages, then a few times per text, then I started thinking in English sometimes about what I read in English, then I started thinking in English about everything when in the mood.

Then I had a trip to England though, that's what helped me to start talking. I had a pretty high psychological barrier, a fear of sounding dumb and offending someone with my poor English, etc. So I went on a two-week trip of "language learning and living in a family" format (it was when the dollar was ~30 and it wasn't even very expensive, it cost me something like 50k roubles iirc). The first week I was like the proverbial dog that understands everything but can't speak =D But on the second week, I started feeling calmer being reassured that no one will laugh at me, and started talking easily and can't shut up ever since. That helped me to expand my active vocab quite significantly.

Talking is important for writing too, who would've thought lol. And then I started frequenting places like reddit for my hobbies and posted there actively and now I can write without thinking much about word choice, grammar, and stuff. It all just comes with practice. (Though, ofc, I still fuck up my articles and stuff sometimes. It's probably easily noticeable that I'm ESL but I'm past being troubled by it. It'll get better on its own in another few years probably)

Still waiting for this to happen  :bubu:
But sometime on the way to my current "able to ask for directions to the local library" i started to watch all the shows with subs and lerned how they pronounce words. Eventually i discovered i know a lot of common words when it written but have no idea how to actually pronounce this shit. And im speaking not only about something complicated like "schedule" (which apparently not шэдуль ), but also simple words like "jail" "entirely" and many more

Trying to build whole sentences in my head, pretending I'm on a work interview also helped to spent a lot less time searching the right word

It happens to me too, without my conscious effort, and it's kinda fucks up my russian writing skills, because I mostly read fandom stuff in english, so by the habit I think about my fics in english too, and some phrasing sound okay in my head in english, but in russian kinda meh.

Oh, I know their explanation. Are you ready? Well, when Hannibal was in his twenties, Will was hardly a teen. And now imagine that they met THEN!

And when Hannibal was 10,5, Will was hardly an embryo! Now imagine they would fuck THEN!
I love these arguments. Like, all people were children at some point so what if they met then! It would be child porn. So, I think, sex must be prohibited. Maybe we could allow it for robots, golems, and aliens who were born adults. But not for people, that's for sure. It's very harmful to people.

First, forums. English-speaking, of course. Got me activexwriting, but then I was the exemplary dog who could do anything, but not speak. At my first English test I scored almost 9 (which is max score) on Writing, Reading and Listening, and 6 on speaking. So I have found speaking-only courses to upgrade that skill specifically.

Ah, that explains why canon Anakin/Padme cringes me so  =D Why, he was what, 9? when they met, and she was a teen already, and HE hit on HER, the pervert!
Also, imagine Will and Hannibal meeting 50 years later, when Will is almost 90,and Hannibal is dead. Urgh, necrophilia... Then again, I still think that in that canon it still won't be the worst thing to happen.  =D

Folks in "заебавшие штампы" hate that reasoning, but it does happen in real life  ;D Pre-pubecent boys can become infatuated with older girls (and pre-pubescent girls with older boys), and if the child is self-assured, he or she can fearlessly enlighten the object of their dreams to the fact. Not that they think of sex, of course.

Sorry, it was almost 20 years ago. Even if they still exist, I have no idea what's they like now. Overall, I've looked for groups, not 1:1 classes, and native teachers. These days it means going online, I guess.
BTW, did you know that e.g. Duolingo has free online events in different levels and subjects? I haven't been there yet so don't know how much of the actual speaking from all the participants is happening, but it's worth looking into. They are not available in the app, you need to open their web-site (in desktop mode if on mobile) - events.duolingo.com.

Trust me, I know, this actually has happened to me, twice (what can I say, younger brothers of your girl friends are a nuisance), and it actually is NOT why this ship cringes me in canon :) and applying this logic to people who did NOT meet as kids is stupid anyways. It's like in that old story with "but they all are naked under the clothes".

Jesus Christ Superstar, 1973, which our English teacher played for us. Actually, in those times there were no movies with English subs, usually, so it was the first I've watched without Russian dubbing.

I don't like watching anything without subs. Actually, I started watching Russian movies with Russian subs instead xD Like, just in case, what if I miss something!
So for English without subs - only youtube probably.

Re: English thread

I don't generally watch movies without subtitles. Because I'm a bit pedantic and not into movies in general (I prefer texts) so when I'm watching a movie, it means that I really want to watch that movie and so I want to understand 100% of what happens. But I use English subtitles, ofc.
So youtube videos on my hobby it is. Those I watch without subs because even if there are auto-generated ones, they're typically shitty. Strangely enough, when I'm watching them I understand almost everything and don't get nervous at all about not understanding stuff. But it doesn't work like this with movies. Probably because they have different people talking with different speeds and accents and all.
UPD Oh, I misread the question  as "no subs at all". Russian subs, tho, those I abandoned long long ago and don't even remember what it was.

Oh, I didn't even notice either.
I've never watched English movies with Russian subtitles, to begin with. And I also watch movies in other languages with English subs 1) just to practice English while watching some silly anime title (yes, I'm self-improving through anime this way!) 2) most Russian subs are translations from English anyway

I usually watch English movies with English subs just in case, but recently I realised that I don't really read them, cause I was watching Korean movie and I had actually read subtitles and it was really inconvenient all of a sudden

Count me in as another person who doesn't ever watch English movies with Russian subs. Or, well, I have to when I go to movies in English in movie theaters, but I've quickly learned to filter them out and do not notice them, as they are distracting and hinder me more than help (in every movie there are at least a few times when subtitles and what was actually said have next to nothing in common. It hurts my brain.)

The first movie I tried to watch with English subs instead of Russian subs was Tideland. I remember it because it was an unsuccessful attempt, after several minutues I had to turn Russian subs back. The first successful attempt to watch a movie with English subs was probably some non-English movie for which I just could not find Russian subtitles. Alas, I can't quite remember the moment when I stopped using Russian subtitles at all.

The second one was "Skins" but the language there is pretty difficult for me, too many jokes.

This, especially if there are accents. I don't want to try deciphering Doctor's timey-wimey bs without any technological assistance.

Re: English thread

Back in 2012 I tried being a badass and watch Sherlock without any subs. Caved in and turned them on like ten minutes into the first episode  Not even sure I'll manage without them even now, Benedict speaks just too fast for my monkey brain.
Back to the topic, I guess my first non-sub movie was Lord of the Rings but it was not especially pleasant experience lmao. I prefer eng subs on everything, just in case.
