Ok, I want to try and do a reading of a fic.
Merry And Bright, a Torchwood Christmas drabble

Before I start I would like to say that it's not an abysmally bad fic, it's just incredibly dull and pointless and completely OOC.

And I really, really don't like the author. If you click on the link to this drabble, you will notice this fic has 1530 chapters. That's not a typo, this person wrote 1530 abso-fucking-lutely OOC drabbles of one of my favorite pairings. They mercifully stuck them all in one file, but even so, the janto tag on AO3 is constantly spammed full with fics of them and another equally bad writer. Like 70% of janto fics are from these two very productive but not very ...insightful people. They remind me a bit of PaleFire, except she writes maxi-length fics, so there are fewer, and she changes fandoms sometimes, while these two don't. I usually have them blocked out with a script, but I turned it off for the sole purpose of finding something bad to do a reading of.
So, I picked a Christmas-themed drabble. Compared to some others I've read, it actually has a bit of a plot!
Again, my main issue with the fic is that it's incredibly OOC and pointless, so I'll focus on that in my reading.

I'll start with the summary:

Summary:
To Ianto’s horror, Jack’s gone over the top with the Christmas decorations again.

Riiight, because that is ab-so-lu-te-ly like them! Ianto, who fights aliens daily, to be horrified by Christmas decorations, and Jack to bother thinking about them at all. Yup, I can totally see how this could be a deleted scene from the show. [sarcasm]

“Deck the halls with boughs of holly…” Jack was singing as he bustled around the Hub, stringing lights and twining tinsel around anything that stayed still long enough. He’d already bought and set up a real fir tree in one corner; decorating that would be his next task.

Riiight. This maybe looks ok on it's own, if you haven't seen Torchwood and Captain Jack. Or, well, maybe not even then. If you haven't seen Torchwood, just imagine your favorite character from whatever canon doing this. Like, you know, some typical male protagonist, not someone known for bouts of merry craziness. I think you're starting to get what I mean with "totally OOC".

Ianto walked in through the cog door and stopped dead, an expression of abject horror on his face. “Jack, I thought we’d agreed to keep the Hub decorations to a minimum this year? Just a small, tasteful fake tree and a few lights…”

So, I mentioned the "horror" in the summary already. I'd also like to say, this isn't how Ianto talks. If I try to imagine him saying this sentence, with this exact wording, I can't. He'd make a short witty comment, not trail off like he doesn't know how to express his disagreement openly.

“I know, but it looked like Scrooge’s version of Christmas, there was no cheer! Christmas should be merry and bright, not just a token plastic tree shoved somewhere out of the way. All year long the Hub’s drab and depressing. Why shouldn’t we have a bit of sparkle? It’s only for a month or so.”

...Riiiight. Because a guy who chooses to live in a small bare room underneath the secret agency hub where he works, is going to care about creating a merry and bright atmosphere. And even if he did, he wouldn't to it himself, he'd get Ianto to decorate for him

“Yes, and then I’m left cleaning up pine needles and glitter and bits of tinsel for the next eleven months,” Ianto said sourly, scowling at the Christmas finery.

Well, ok, that actually was in character.

“Grinch!” Jack accused. “Where’s your Christmas spirit? Stop complaining and give me a hand with these lights. You’re not going to rain on my festive parade!”

The End

Meh... This wasn't. Again, this wasn't Jack's "voice", not how he would phrase this.

So, this was the entire fic. That's it. There's no plot, nothing is happening, there isn't any atmosphere, no beautiful language. The characters the author writes about could easily be any two guys, they don't talk like themselves, they don't behave or feel like in canon. There is absolutely no depth, no interesting situation that you could describe in a drabble, no thought or feeling expressed, it's ~200 words of total, absolute absence of any positive qualities you might want to read a fic for.
And this person wrote over 1500 of them, and this one isn't even the worst I've read.

Chapter 1525: Dreary Weather
Summary:
It looks like Christmas is going to be a washout.

‘White Christmas’ was blaring out through the supermarket’s speakers as Ianto wheeled his trolley up and down the aisles, stocking up with supplies for both home and Hub.

In his opinion, there was little chance of Cardiff’s Christmas being anything but grey, judging by the rain clouds hanging over the city, pouring their contents down over everything for the third day in a row. They’d be lucky if the heavy downpour didn’t result in flooding. Not that Ianto had any particular liking for snow, it made Torchwood’s job ten times harder than usual, but he was heartily tired of getting soaked every time he had to set foot outside. At least snow wasn’t quite so wet.

With less than a week to go, despite the festive music and decorations it didn’t feel like Christmas; the spirit of the season was decidedly lacking, no doubt waterlogged like everything else. The other shoppers looked as fed up with it all as he was.

Paying for his shopping at the checkout, Ianto wheeled his heavily laden trolley out to his car, getting drenched in the process; trolleys and umbrellas didn’t mix. What he wouldn’t give for a glimpse of blue sky and sunshine!

Some random thoughts about the weather from someone who basically is an original character with a stolen name. What the ever-living fuck has this got to do with Torchwood?! Argh, I can usually ignore them with my awesome userscript, but now I've had to think about them I'm mad again.

Corrections are absolutely welcome! Also corrections of style and weird word choice, I sometimes mix words up.

I could have been writing my stuff, or cleaning the house, or... well, sleeping - but I keep telling myself that a little past midnight is too late to write or clean up (I'm quite the morning person, it's hard for me to get things done let's say... after 8pm) and too early to sleep - so here I am.

I had seem almost nothing - right now I can remember only Daria (did you saw this masterpiece?), Friends and H20 - and I want to find something like this. Usual life (maybe a little fantasy like H20) , relationships with boyfriends/girlfriends, just friends and the world around, non-rated, no negative at the end.

Well, I would suggest Doctor Who if you haven't seen it already. It doesn't meet all your requests: it has way more than "a little fantasy" in it and it's not really about relationship (but there are characters which are simply impossible not to ship), but it has the traveling thing (across the Universe! Time and Space and things like this) and certainly there's no bad ending (no ending at all, to be more precise, the show is still going). And it's also funny, witty, and simply brilliant. And it has David Tenant.

So I certainly recommend watching it - if you like sci-fi and don't mind a bit of... childishness, I suppose.

Oh, and of course it's easy to find it with the original sound (subtitles are also available).

Right, and it's pretty addictive too. Thank a lot! I heard about this already, but didn't saw any episode before. "Childishness"  sounds like a good recommendation.

I googled David Tennant and found that his hairstyle at some photos reminds me of Eddie Redmayne. I remember how somebody here at Kholivorka mentioned "Savage Grace" - and then I watched almost 1/3 of his filmography. It looks like he playing himself at most of the films and it's a bit annoying - but them I watched "Hick", and was impressed how totally different he looks! Just another person. He can play, and it's a little bit sad that his filmography includes mostly stories about good brought up right shy boys from old-fashioned Europe families.

I hope you'll find the show worth watching! On a side note, Doctor Who has been on air since 1963, stopped then for a decade or so and then returned to the screens in 2005 (with Christopher Eccleston playing the Ninth Doctor). I personally find that the initial show (black and white first, and just imagine what special effects were like in the 60s. The very number of episodes is honestly overwhelming.) is more for "hardcore" fans while the relaunched version of 2005 is definitely more modern and entertaining. For people who are just getting to know the show, I would recommend starting with the newer version.

Or "The Danish Girl", which was the reason the actor was massively criticized for playing a trans character while being a cis-male?

You know, I'm a bit confused now. So the show relaunch at 2005 start with Ninth Doctor story? And would the stories of 1st-8th Doctors be told later? Yeah, I had seen both of those films!
At the Jupiter Ascending I didn't really understand his characters' person. He does not have any story, and we don't know what he likes and dislikes, personal life - they just mentioned some facts at the film and then he behaved like a scenario's puppet, because the film - let me not to be polite about this - was awful. I don't know if I can use word "cardboard" here, I don't know a special English word for this kind of stories, but I dislike it really, really strong.
What about "The Danish Girl" - hmm, I'm sure, he totally looks shy at any episode we see him. And I'm not good at that period of time 's characteristics but he didn't look like non-conformist at the scenes with other people - they never react at his words or behavior with shock, I, if I remember right, even have some jokes about him being so good, so I think that he is a brought-up right boy there too.

I just thought, does those films about real people, who lived at the same time with us or just a little bit before, have the fandom too? And found some fanfiction about "The Danish Girl"! I guess this topic need some readings again.
