I learned english through playing videogames and watching TV shows and letsplays - first with subtitles, then without. And so far so good, some english speaking people even said to me that my english is good) I still often need help with spelling, and my accent is terrible, obviously, but other than that - i'm not bad.
So don't lose hope, anon! Just listen a lot, read a lot in english - and you'll get there one day)
I don't speak english but I will write and read. You write very clearly!
i can't write suddenly, i don't know
I wish to return to playing SWTOR one day – there were no russian subtitles (which I always use just to not miss something important in other games/tv-series/etc.) at all and it turns I still can play and understand something... well, not always, but still. Oh, and one text game for phone was good too.
AND I ALWAYS CAN FIND LAZY TOWN IN ORIGINAL YEAH I STUDY ENGLISH EXACTLY FOR THAT
For my real level up in English I owe to ff.net. First I've read some 200k+ words with dictionary close&ready, then some more without it, then I wrote (& it was terrible, ofc), then I've been watching Torchwood with some badly synchronized subtitles, got tired of fixing said subtitles, turned them off and never really missed them. And then I found mself too lazy to look for subtitles for tv shows. Few times it turned out funny, because I tend to mishear things
I always wanted to have some kind of languages-connected work despite the fact I only know english (a little) and german (even less than english). Well, sometimes your wishes come true. Sometimes it goes not in the way you imagined. And now I read everyday in almost any language different variations of pick-up lines and 'send nudes'. Hello, my name is anon and this is the sad story of my life
I learnt English by reading gay porn at LJ, FFnet (back in old days, when porn was still allowed) and various fandom spaces. Oh well, it's all about motivation and I'm sure I'm not the only one with such a background here, at Kholivorka.

Yes) (you know, in English-language conversation online people keep recognizing me as Russian by my habit of ending sentences with ))) and the like) It should be 'in English', not 'on English', but actually I've been thinking the whole day about how to express Russian-style 'flooding' in English. I'd say 'spamming' is the closest, as in 'sorry I've been spamming your comments thread with random stuff' but it's not quite the same. Kind of a unique thing we have here.

Wow, thats's cool! I also learned english by reading fanfiction, then went on to watch tv shows with subtitles... and stayed at that level for the past 10 years :( I should have taken the jump within the first couple of years and just stopped using them. I've tried a few times recently, but it's just too uncomfortable now, I've grown so used to subtitles. Well, at least I'm good at speed reading, I guess.

Omg, thanks! :hat:
Do you have New Year mood, anons? May be we will read New Year fanfics or other kind of stories? :yolka:

There is an AU category for Dickens' A Cristmas Carol, fuck my life. Our fellow fandom dwellers from the rotten West are sure well-read and into classics.

Nah, there's been a ton of movie and cartoon adaptations of that story :hat:

One of the biggest text I ever read in English was slash ff about OTP. Just a couple of nights with brief pauses for sleep :hat:
I tend to mishear things
How I like trying to understand the words in songs! Sometimes it turns absolutely different with real text lol, sometimes just one thing in it which you like more than original, sometimes you even guess right and it's pleasant.
Lol, I often suck at understanding song lyrics even in Russian! It's like, I hear random snatches of lyrics and am not sure how they are connected, and not even trying. So songs in English... if they're hummable, who cares what they're about. (true story: after listening to a song by a then-favorite band for maybe a year and a half, I suddenly realized what it is about and was so surprised, I went to the band forum and asked, "Guys, is this really a song about a stalker?". Yes, they told me, it really is about a stalker)
Kholivorka
Lmao that’s hilarious
actually I've been thinking the whole day about how to express Russian-style 'flooding' in English
Can it be “shitposting”? Hm now when I think about it it sounds rude. Sorry.
My English was good back in school days, then i’ve lost all the skills, then mmorpg happened and anon communicated there successfully using “go”, “ok”, “enemy inc” and “res pls” well now it got better, God bless the internet
But still not as good as it could be.
Also I often think in English, but thanks again, internet, this is usually an abomination english: memes, broken grammar and random subtitle pieces fused together.

True story.
You know the Billy Jean song? The Michael Jackson’s song, ultimate hit. All I could understand was the “you are the one who will dance on the floor” and I kept thinking oooommmmggg this is so cool!
Few days ago this song got stuck in me head and I searched for lyrics just to get rid of it.
And I was like wtf?? This song is about a guy who got a girl pregnant and now tells everyone that wasn’t him???
My life will never be the same.
(I probably fucked up grammar again, I apologize)

I don't know - my English is fairly good, but I'm never sure what is and isn't too rude in English...
My pretty anons, I have a new idea! May be we will read not only fics, but also stories about Moomintrolls?
And may be this is better to translate the world "чтения" like "readings"?

Same shit. "An abomination English"... I llike how it sounds.

First one I remember is a Duck Tales version I happened to see when I was like 5 years old, with many more to follow. So yeah, a ton of this stuff I'd say a certain AU tag in mass media' bonus episodes, and quite popular one.
