Лапки by Mecc
The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System — Mòxiāng Tóngxiù
Additional Tags: Crack Treated Seriously
Words: 38 938

Relationship: Shen Jiu | Original Shen Qingqiu/Yue Qingyuan
Words: 71 926
Works: 18
Summary:

“You also said that exorcising that dog wasn’t a good idea, but…” Hiromasa pursed his lips. “I still went to see lord Kamo-no-Yasunori again. Just to ask him about the okuri-inu, you understand,” he hurried to add.

“What did he recommend?” Haruakira asked mildly, cocking his head to one side.

“He didn’t.” Hiromasa made a face. “You wouldn’t believe what he did instead.”

“He forwarded you to Abe-no-Seimei?”

“How did you know!?”

“You wouldn’t make such a sour face for anyone else,” Haruakira sipped placidly.

“Well I have every reason to be sour, in fact,” Hiromasa huffed, hoping he didn’t look as puff-cheeked as he felt.

“Oh? Do tell.” The dreaded fan made an appearance, poised at the red, moist lips and ready to snap open.

“You see, lord Yasunori advised me to go straight to Abe-no-Seimei’s home on Tsuchimikado,” Hiromasa started sourly, arranging his sleeves. “There, a lady from his household, who wouldn’t so much as let me step through the threshold, told me he was at work.”

“Nothing unusual, is it?”

“So I went to the bureau of divination, where a colleague of his told me he wasn’t there, he had been called away to Sai-ji. Which sounded pretty serious, knowing how onmyouji and monks don’t get along. However, at Sai-ji, they told me he had canceled on them because he was attending a personal request from the minister of the right.”

“Hn.” The fan did snap open.

“Only,” Hiromasa huffed, “when I went to the minister of the right, butting in on his family drama, if I may add, he told me that the gentleman had been called away home on an extremely important household matter, at which point I was ready to acquaint my sword with his soft parts, scary magical powers or not. And not necessarily with the sheath on, either.”

Haruakira’s shoulders were shaking in silent laughter behind the indigo and gold fan.

“And you know what?” Hiromasa rode on the wave of righteous indignation, “I think the creepy, cocky onmyouji is actually just off somewhere quiet and cosy, having a nice drink and a few laughs with some pretty thing while everyone’s busy trying to catch him and get him to do his bloody job.”

“Pretty, smart and capable.”

“Sorry?”

“Nothing, nothing,” Haruakira said and emerged from behind his fan, looking slightly pink and struggling to stay calm. “I am absolutely certain that you are right in thinking that. And I am sorry for your plight.”

Summary:
Sudden awareness crashed over him and Liu Qingge froze in his tracks. Carefully, without looking, he lowered his extended leg, shudders running through his body. Why was he on all fours? What kind of immersive dream had left him believing that he was feline even upon waking? It was ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. He would stand up, return back to where he had camped down, collect his bag and finish flying back to Cang Qiong. In just a moment. He just needed a moment to reorient himself. Just a moment.
A bird exploded out of the tall grasses nearby. Startled, Liu Qingge leapt into the air, a yowl tearing its way from his throat. He landed on all fours, claws extended and fangs bared, the fur down his spine standing on end. He could see his front paws now, the grey striped fur of his forelegs. Denial was impossible in the face of such evidence. Somehow, as he slept, Liu Qingge had been transformed into a cat.

“This master received a concerning report that students from our warrior peak were sighted ambushing and shaking down civilians.”

“This disciple assures Shifu that no civilians were harmed. The attacked parties were all members of well-known gangs of bandits.”

Zhou Wenshin narrowed his eyes. “Yet not all of them were handed over to face justice for their crimes.”

“Some of them were new, desperate recruits. I judged that a light beating courtesy of Liu-shidi would set them straight and scare them off the villainous path for good. It’s only righteous that we give the downtrodden a second chance.”

“In exchange for…?”

“In exchange for,” Xiao Shen wet his lower lip, “a material show of gratitude.”

Zhou Wenshin inhaled deeply and counted down from twenty. “My darling disciple, that’s called extortion and is heavily frowned upon in polite society. Also illegal.”

Xiao Shen’s hands twitched as if he barely resisted throwing them in the air. “Shifu, why is it that whenever I strike up a cooperative venture with my martial siblings you stick a fancy name on it and accuse me of crimes?”

“Because they are crimes, whether you are aware of it or not, and you are implicating your naïve, gullible sect siblings.”

“What was so wrong about helping An Ding? I got them in contact with cheaper vendors using cheaper trade routes!”

“You had them smuggle contraband while committing tax evasion.”

“Peh! Taxes!” Xiao Shen scrunched up his nose in revulsion. Zhou Wenshin privately agreed. “What about when I tried putting all that scrap metal on Wan Jian to good use? Even Pei-shishu admitted it was a great idea!”

“In principle yes. But you had the metal made into coins, and that’s counterfeiting.”

“I helped curb the rumors about the books produced on Xian Shu!”

“Out of the goodness of your heart?”

“Partially.” Xiao Shen lowered his voice. “I did demand a cut from their sales in exchange for my silence.”

Zhou Wenshin clicked his tongue. “Blackmailing.”

“Fine, maybe! But I don’t see why advising the Qing Jing Peak students to practice their skills by making copies of their master’s paintings was bad!”

“No, that was quite alright,” Zhou Wenshin replied. Seeing a righteous grin beginning to emerge on Xiao Shen’s face, he added: “Selling their artwork under the false impression that they were painted by Xie-shidi himself was the problem. Forgery is punished quite severely in our region.”

“Tch. Art is art, does it matter who made it as long as it’s the same quality of pretty?”

“Same quality of pretty,” Zhou Wenshin mouthed silently. He swore he could feel the earth tremble under his feet as thousands of great scholars and famed artists turned in their graves.

“Shifu clearly thinks I am unworthy of associating with the other peaks,” Xiao Shen sniffed. “But that doesn’t explain why he removed me from some of the chore rosters on Qiong Ding. Like budgeting!”

“You got too creative with the numbers.”

“Being good at math is illegal now?”

“Only if it leads to embezzling.”

Xiao Shen huffed, rumpling the sleeves of his robes in his clenched fists. “And cooking? Even I can’t make that into a crime—"

“Arson.”

A beat of silence.

Xiao Shen bit his lower lip and made an expression that looked incredibly bullied.

“It was only a little fire,” he muttered.

“Hm.”

“I wanted to make savory cabbage buns.”

“Mn.”

“They are one of Qi-ge’s favorites.”

“Right.”

“And it was his birthday.”

“Ah.”

Zhou Wenshin felt bad. Though he was fully aware that the conversation was specifically engineered by Xiao Shen for this exact purpose, the knowledge didn’t help alleviate the feeling.

He cleared his throat. “Xiao Shen may be allowed back in the kitchens with the caveat that he is always under the supervision of a senior disciple.”

Xiao Shen blinked up at him with a hopeful look.

“You are still forbidden from bookkeeping.”

“Tch.”

Honoured a-niang,
Please give my loving regards to a-die, gege, and meimei. This disobedient son apologizes for not having written in a while. I have been busy with my duties and night hunts. Ouyang-shixiong will soon retire from being head disciple and I have taken on many of his duties. We also recently brought back Venom-Devouring Pandas to the sect, and I promise I will tell you about it. But first, I have a question.
Qing Jing Peak’s head disciple, Shen Qingqiu (Shen Jiu, as in black jade, until recently), not only shares our name, but also my face. He accused me of being a face-stealer when we met. It is like looking in the mirror, if I had a tendency to glare at everything and everyone. From what I gather, though he won’t speak to me much and no one seems to know anything about him, he is twenty-three years old. Two years my senior. Even his voice sounds like mine.
A-niang. Please. Is there anything you want to tell me?
