“Do you like, draw your eyebrows on, cause I’ve seen people without eyebrows and it always looks really weird, y’know? I mean, your face needs eyebrows. It’s like if you didn’t have a belly button. Uncanny valley, you feel me?”

“Uhhh,” Wade says, and Peter can see that his eyes have widened now behind his mask, because Wade made some kind of deal with some kind of devil to get that level of expression out of leather and spandex. Or nylon, or whatever he usually claims it is. Lycra. Peter’s suit has lycra and spandex, but he can’t remember what Wade’s has...

Peter is so. Tired. And Wade’s talking now.

“--lucky you’re so fuckin’ cute, that’s all I’m sayin’,” Wade finishes. Peter wrinkles his nose, although he’s smiling sheepishly.

“I know, I know,” he says, shrugging. “I’m a dick. Heard it before. I’ll buy you an espresso bomb if you want.”

“Yeah,” Wade replies as they step up to the counter together. “Go ahead, then, Bambi, pull that foot outta your mouth and order me somethin’ to drink. Somethin’ sweet.”

“I’ve never seen a mask take the subway before,” the kid remarks conversationally and sits opposite Wade.

“I forgot where I parked my supersonic jetpack and no taxi would take me. I don’t know how they’ll ever make it in this town if bodily fluids make them queasy,” Wade tells him and sighs for dramatic effect.

The kid snorts an amused, inelegant sound like Wade has caught him by surprise.

“You do not have a supersonic jetpack,” he points out astutely, “The Gs would be physically impossible for any human body to handle, super or not.”

“I do too! I keep it next to my invisibility cloak in the wardrobe that takes me to Narnia. And this body can handle all sorts of amazing things, trust me,” Wade replies and waves a hand indicating, well, all of himself really. Is he flirting? He might be flirting, so he soldiers on bravely, “I’ll show it to you some time.”

“I’m confused, sorry. Are we talking about the jetpack or your supposedly amazing body right now?” the kid asks and quirks a smile so dry it would make the winds in the Sahara pale in comparison. Right now Wade would bet his right kidney (if it was worth anything) that the kid is flirting back.

“Oh, I can show you both, sweetcheeks. Anytime,” Wade replies. It’s leery and suggestive and a blatant lie because the last thing a guy this sweet needs is the nightmares that seeing Wade’s decaying carcass would bring. The kid only rolls his eyes, but it’s all good-natured. He seems to be taking it all in a stride.

The kid’s stop arrives a couple before Wade’s. He gets up and adjusts his backpack, looking a bit nervous.

“Hey, what’s your name?” he asks, painfully casual like he’s trying to play it cool.

The truth slips out accidentally, unbidden, “Wade.”

The kid looks as surprised as Wade feels.

“Wade?” he repeats and his grin turns lopsided and sincere. “A bit understated for a mask, no?”

“You can call me Wade-Man if you want,” Wade offers immediately, “Or Wade-Eye. Captain Wade. Hell, you can call me whatever the fuck you want, baby boy.”

“Peter.”

“You wanna call me Peter? An unconventional choice, but alri–”

“No, I mean I'm Peter.”

“Peter,” Wade repeats, testing it out. Peter offers him another lopsided smile and a wave before he hops off the train. Wade expects never to see him again.

Yet, the encounter lingers with him, spreading warmth in his chest even when he sits in his dimly lit bathroom and cuts bullets from his thigh. Afterward he stares in the mirror, his mask still on, and tries to imagine what Peter saw that made him offer that small kindness of decent human interaction. Despite the best effort, Wade draws a blank.

Нас было семеро офицеров, подбитых Салтыковым на сомнительное предприятие. Суворов, четыре капитана драгунских эскадронов, майор-кирасир и я. Кроме того, к нам в компанию затесался волонтёр Курт Тотлебен, бывший голландский полковник и авантюрист. У нас было шесть сотен всадников, десять обозных фургонов, пять лёгких орудий, мои «близнята» и сорок конных егерей, вооружённых штуцерами-«огнебоями». "A TEMPLE DOG," Crowley howled almost inaudibly into the receiver. He had an icepack clasped to his forehead, he was curled miserably in the comforter, and the slightest noise was pain. As was light, and movement, and breathing (which, at least, he'd managed to stop). He was spilling out his woes to Aziraphale's ansaphone for lack of anyone else to tell. "A temple dog. An actual demon-banishing temple dog, the thing had teeth like — like-- I've got no idea, and it barked at me, and if I hadn't made it up the stairs-" he fell into a shuddering silence, remembering the boom and rattle of hinges as more than two hundred pounds of fur, meat, and holy protection had slammed into the door that led down to the wizard's basement apartment. And the teeth. The teeth. "...if you get this message, CALL, would you?"

The machine hung up. The dial tone almost split his head open, and he lowered the phone down with a shaking hand, sagging back into the bed to lay as still as possible until the migraine caused by the echoing, demon-driving bark was gone. For a moment, there was only warmth and blissful silence.

Someone pounded on the door. "Housekeeping!"

Demons can cry. Crowley proved it.

“Wha—?”

A hot line of pain sears across the outside of Wade’s shoulder and he looks down to see blood oozing from a bullet wound, dripping down the sleeve of his leather jacket. Well… not his leather jacket.

“I just stole this jacket,” he whines.

“DUCK, asshole,” the voice barks in his ear and Wade is leaning over the handlebars, knees gripped tight to the gas tank, before his brain can even process the words.

Hhngh.

Fuck.

Okay.

A bullet shatters a shop window to Wade’s left and he quickly readjusts his perspective.

If Wade's new comms guy can get him out of this alive, Wade might be willing to give it a chance.

After all, he usually pays $1.99 a minute to get someone to talk to him like that.

- Что-то они маленькие и многовато их, - вздрогнул Снейп. – Или я не обо всех знаю?
- Дядя Сев, у них же много-много родственников в других местах живет! – пояснил Гарри и тяжело вдохнул. – А это тетя Дрома. Она редко улыбается, а у меня улыбается! – похвалился он.
Снейп посмотрел на соседку мандрагоры, то есть профессора Спраут. И правда, улыбалась.
- Это дядя Хмури, - Гарри указал на бесформенную фигуру с огромным глазом. – Он всегда хочет, чтобы его не увидели раньше времени – поделился секретом мальчик. – Поэтому я нарядил его в тучку. Правда, похоже на тучку?
- Правда, - согласился зельевар. - А где же Хагрид?
- Тут, - Гарри ткнул в толстую зеленую ящерицу.
- Где тут? – не понял Снейп.
- Это дракон, - Гарри махнул рукой. – Дядя Хагид мне рассказывал про драконов и что они людей едят. А потом плакал, вытирал нос и говорил, что хочет дракона. Вот тут дракон скушал дядю Хагида. Он рад.
- Ну, дракон точно, - с сомнением в голосе произнес Северус. – Но ты дяде Хагриду всё-таки рисунок не показывай, вдруг… вдруг ему больше красные драконы нравятся. И с крыльями.
- Хорошо, - пожал плечами Гарри и ткнул пальчиком в черную фигурку. – А это ты, дядя Сев.
- А я такой? – Снейп на глаз измерил расстояние от своей фигурки до центра листа и остался доволен.
- Почти, - Гарри вздохнул и произнес голосом утомленного художника. – Что-то не так, не знаю только что.
- А где же ты? – спохватился зельевар.
- Я? – Гарри смутился и шепотом сказал. – Я тут.
Снейп посмотрел на маленький домик, до которого было рукой подать его нарисованному двойнику, и неожиданно для себя до крови закусил губу.
- Я понял, понял! – Гарри не видел выражения лица Снейпа, он снова полез в коробку с карандашами. – Вот чего не хватает!
Кривая розовая линия пролегла на лице нарисованного зельевара, заставляя смотрящего на картинку взрослого тоже улыбнуться и протереть глаза.
- Пыли много в комнате, - зачем-то оправдываясь, произнес он. – В глаза лезет, надо нам с тобой попросить домовиков тут протереть всё. Да и вообще, пойти погулять пора.
Гарри соскочил со стула и протянул Снейпу руку.
Рисунок остался лежать на столе.

"If you are not going to tell me the least you can do is help me out for the day."

"That was weak," Harry accused. "You're not even trying today with your manipulations. I feel insulted. This lack of attention will make me leave with another dictator."

Riddle rolled his eyes but looked at him fondly amused. "There are no dictators in Britain," he denied weakly, and with a smiled he added, "and if there were, you'd only have me."

"I could go international," Harry threatened.

Riddle narrowed his eyes. "Let's go to my office."

Harry sipped his coffee and tried to think about how to wiggle out of more work. He was curious about what Riddle wanted him to do but his eyes were closing with how tired he was. He had been looking forward to napping in his office. Hell, he only got out of bed with the promise of a short chat with Riddle and then sleeping in his office for the rest of the morning. But ultimately this was his boss and he needed the job for one more year.

"You have a sofa in your office?"

Riddle looked apprehensive but still answered, "I do."

"You get many visitors?"

"...Potter, we are not going to have sex in my office."

Harry's jaw dropped. He threw his head back and laughed. "Sex? I was thinking about taking a nap." A flush crept from Riddle's neck to his face. Harry watched its progress avidly.

Riddle cleared his throat. "A nap is fine." Riddle looked like he was a second away from apparating out to escape his blunder.

"So is there a no sex in the office rule?" Harry asked with a smirk because he still hasn't found a sleeping dragon he wouldn't poke.

"Uh." Riddle grimaced. "The door doesn't lock anymore...there were problems with other ministers."

Not you? Harry wanted to ask, but he bit his lip. Instead, he asked "Ah. So about that nap?"

"Half an hour, no more," Riddle said firmly as if he wasn't wildly glad they moved past the conversation.

"So bossy."

"I am your boss."

"Kinky." Harry folded out from his perch in the desk, dropped his now empty cup of coffee in the trash. "Fine, let's go."

He didn’t know what the thing had been. He didn’t know where it had come from. But he knew one thing. It had destroyed Master Regulus’s locket, which Kreacher had failed to do for years, and fulfilled the last orders Master Regulus had laid on Kreacher.

That meant it deserved something from him.

Before nightfall, Kreacher had built a small black altar in a corner of the kitchen and lit the black candles Mistress had once used for her rituals, and which Kreacher had found in a corner of the attic. He cast himself on the floor in front of the altar and tried to recreate, as much as he could with a small, single voice, the chant he had heard when the creature crawled into the house.

He would worship it, and perhaps it would come back someday and tell him its desires.
